TV And Film Star And Academy Award Nominee Dies At 82

The cause of death for the beloved actor who passed away at 82 on December 8 has been confirmed as congestive heart failure. For years, he lived with cardiomyopathy, a chronic condition that weakens the heart muscle and gradually impairs its ability to pump blood efficiently. His death certificate cites no contributing factors beyond this illness. He spent his final days at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California, and was laid to rest at Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park & Mortuary.

Cardiomyopathy, according to the Mayo Clinic, can lead to fatigue, shortness of breath, and irregular heartbeats—and often worsens over time. It can be genetic or develop later in life due to various health issues or lifestyle factors.

The actor, best known for iconic roles in “Love Story,” “What’s Up, Doc?” and “Paper Moon,” left a lasting legacy in film and television. Throughout his decades-long career, he earned an Academy Award nomination and multiple Golden Globe nods. While his on-screen charm captivated audiences, those who knew him personally remember a man who was generous, deeply devoted to his loved ones, and proud of the life he lived.

News of his passing was shared by his son, Patrick O’Neal, who posted a photo of a sunset alongside a heartfelt message. Calling his father’s loss “a huge void,” Patrick reflected on his father’s impact and character. “Ryan made such an impact and this will be difficult without him,” he wrote. “My dad was 82, and he lived a kick ass life.”

Patrick also paid tribute to his father’s enduring relationship with Farrah Fawcett, the iconic actress with whom he shared nearly two decades. They were never married, but their bond was unmistakable. “Everyone had the poster,” Patrick wrote. “He had the real McCoy. And now they meet again. Farrah and Ryan. He has missed her terribly. What an embrace that must be. Together again.”

Both stars of their time, they now rest in fame and memory—immortalized side by side on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. When he received his star in 2021, the actor remarked, “I grew up around Hollywood Boulevard… Who would have thought I would end up with a star on the Walk of Fame?” In honor of his passing, flowers were placed on his star.

He was married twice, both unions ending in divorce. He is survived by his four children, who carry forward both his name and his legacy.
